Seeing in Black and White

June 30, 2020

My vision for The Eureka Room (2.0) walls and ceiling was a colorscheme of all white. Like the Apple store, or a manufacturing clean room. Very boring and neutral.

That way when the lights came on, the sudden jump to a colorful world would add to the surprises and moments experienced.

I think, subconsciously, I also did it because I’m tired of how unabashedly monochrome the world is these days.

Remember when Apple’s apple used to have a rainbow and you could choose from all kinds colors like “tangerine” and “strawberry”?

They had colors named Blue Dalmation and Flower Power!

Today at Apple? Gray or silver. Sorry if you want to think different.

It’s not just Apple of course.  Most modern/trendy restaurants, hotels, apartments have an embraced this color scheme inside and out. (And imo painting the front door yellow or orange doesn’t count for anything but a memorial).

What do the colors a company chooses for their product/store/hotel/etc reflect? Is it really just following a trend or does it say something about the soul or mood of the company? Or the customer? Or both?

Or perhaps it is because we spend so much time looking at flashing colors on all of our screened devices? Maybe we need all this monochrome to create a visual equilibrium.
