Eureka Room Update 10/14/22

October 14, 2022

Last night, Thursday, I left Chelsea to run the room on her own for the first time. That was a milestone for me. I don’t have to be there for every single showing. This will give me a lot of my time and sanity back. The current plan is that she’ll take much of the weekend showings and I’ll do the weekend mornings and early afternoon.s

I’m still working on fixing up the tech side of things. I’ve got my personal Macbook as part of the system, which means I can’t work on it when it is needed for a show. I’ve got a person in Ukraine who has built me a better Touchdesigner setup so that it can control the parts of the show that the Macbook is currently doing. It’s also setup to run on a wireless tablet, which will make running the show much easier and more slick from the visitor’s perspective. Right now it involves one remote, a tablet, and running back and forth to the control room.

I reached out a second time to the landlord to see what the plans are after my lease is up. I don’t know what I want at that point, but I want to see what options there are. There’s another place on Cesar Chavez I’ve already started looking into.

I’m getting the website migrated to Elementor. I was dreading doing it myself, because it would be more learning and frustrating and probably 8 hours of work and still not be what I want ideally. Then I realized this was a very discrete task and that I can hire someone for it. Wish I had thought of that sooner.

The current template was kind of wonky on the front page. Instead of using a page, it did some weird magic using widgets and as a result I wasn’t able to duplicate the page. I probably could if I dug into the bowels of the theme and edited the files, but that did not seem to be a very robust solution. Having it rebuilt using Elementor will allow me to do landing pages that look exactly like the homepage, plus allow me to use a hero image and put text on top of it (visitor quotes, for example). I’m sure this was possible with the old theme, but this way I’ll get a nice established visual editor instead of writing code. I used upwork to find someone and I think literally hired someone in about 30 minutes.

I have a backlog of quadrant II work I’m looking forward to getting to, like reading all the surveys people have filled out the last two months. I’m so behind on that. There’s also some hiring paperwork that still needs done, accounting is pretty far behind, and I need to start the search for funding the future because this bootstrap thing has reached the end of its usefulness.
