The Museum of Be Here Now

September 23, 2022

The places you are taught to focus on the “now” are usually limited. Maybe it’s reading a book. Maybe it’s in a meditation or yoga class. But those environments are almost always still, quiet, and not very representative of the situations in life that you really need to be here now.

So this museum gives you more situations to practice “being in the now”.

Obviously you could practice the now anywhere (because it’s always now everywhere, right?), but what this museum provides is the help to get focused on the now – reminders that now is the time to get in the now.

The essence of the museum is that you go from exhibit to exhibit and get in the now with it. You go from experience to experience and get in the now with it. You focus on it. You try to be in the now with that object or experience.

Some examples. Sit in this hard chair and be in the now. Sit in this soft chair and be in the now. Stand in this corner and be in the now. Look at this painting and be in the now. Put on these handphones and listen to this song and be in the now. Hold this object and be in the now. Look at these people and be in the now. Shop in the gift shop and be in the now. Have a drink at the water fountain and be in the now. Listen to other visitors and be in the now.

The museum gives you an overall script or imperative or reminder that here is where you be so get in the now.

To help keep you focused, there might even be a set of headphones that reminds you to do this. Or signs on the wall. Or frequent announcements to be here in the now. Maybe some docents.

All the senses could be engaged. The motion of walking or talking could be examined. The light or absence of could be utilized to help focus you on the now.

Maybe instead of constant “now”, an announcement comes across the room to stop and focus on the now. Don’t talk or move. Just observe this moment. I think this could be something you could introduce at any museum as a fun activity. (Well, fun for those into this kind of thing, of course).
