The Cost of Switching Universes

January 13, 2023

I was looking to write a post on this topic today and discovered I drafted this post back on 10/7/2021. More on that later in this post.

Here’s the updated post

The last six months were the off season for my calendar company, and I was able to work on my new business, The Eureka Room.

But lately it has been a struggle to make much progress on the room.

Your first thought might be that my work on the calendar company takes all my time. That’s mostly true, but that’s not the biggest part of the problem.

The big problem is what I call “the cost of changing universes”.

Each universe (Calendars/Eureka Room) is defined by a different set of problems and requires a different emotional and approach.

Imagine yourself sitting in a captain’s chair. Extending out from your body are hundreds of glowing streams, each connecting to one of the things, people, places, concepts, and challenges in your line of work.

Each of these streams has its own rules, history, risks, and rewards.

These streams also have emotional and spiritual levels that fluctuate based on your overall state and the state of the thing it connects to. It’s dynamic.

There’s also streams that are connected back to your self. Things like personal hopes, expectations, interests, and how you view things about this universe.

Then a call comes in about your second company.

And you have to disconnect those hundreds and hundreds of streams, put it away, then walk over to a different universe and reconnect those hundreds of connections.

The energy it takes to do that is formidable, exhausting, can cause emotional-mental whiplash. It also doesn’t result in gains for either universe. It’s a net negative, and often a big one.

The cost of switching universes is easily underestimated (or overlooked altogether) when we take on multiple projects. I hate multitasking. (Also science says it does not work.) This is 100x multi-tasking.

So why am I posting this today?

I wrote the above over a year ago. The calendars have continued to be a distraction for the room. In my defense, I really didn’t have another source of income, so this seemed like the best route. But now I can see they have to go. Stay tuned.
