Eureka Room Update 2/10/23

February 10, 2023

Here’s some of the things I’ve been working on this week at The Eureka Room.

Program Updates

This has been on my plate forever. I was excited to finally get on it. “Color Color” was too long I think (6 minutes) so I chopped it down to about 2 minutes and created 2 entirely new 1.5-2 min minute programs that will be put in between the interactive programs. I think this will make it more interesting for visitors and give them more for their money. Each program has a different feel, so the hope is that visitors will feel they got to experience a lot of different stuff and have a lot to talk about. I hope I can wrap it up next Tuesday and get it into production next week.

Website Updates

This is a long time coming. We’ve had some people think it was a “scam”, which I found offensive and mean since a lot of people have really loved it. I think the issue is setting expectations. I’ve been working on language over the last couple weeks that will really reflect what to expect. (e.g. “an elevator designed by someone who loves Microsoft Paint”).

Yesterday I sat down and wrote out a draft and thankfully the tone and spirit of the room was coming out in the writing. When I first made the site I wanted it to look “professional” and, well, I succeeded. I was worried about being taken seriously and looking “real”. But it was devoid of my tone and only mysterious and attracted people who weren’t quite up for the risk taking and adventure that it is. I can definitely see how the current site might be interpreted in the wrong way by people.

By making the site crazier and adding more of the MSPaint drawings, I think I can communicate the feel way, way better. I’m afraid I might scare too many people away, but I’m going to give it a shot and see. The things we love the most are of disputable value.

I know if I saw the site as a tourist and it sounded like this new draft does, I would be like “WTF YES” and be sending it on to my friends immediately.

Other Work This Week

Finalizing the new swag order, bookkeeping, showings, Grant came and fixed the sign in the window, built a door to block light, put up the paper towel rack. Those were long overdue. Also the usual flotsam and jetsam. Thankfully far less calendar work.
