Eureka Room Update 12/16/22

December 16, 2022

The two weeks before Christmas are the busiest for my calendar company and me. So this might be a short update.

Speaking of calendar company, I need to get rid of it. It’s definitely taken me away from work that is far more important to me. I will either sell it, let it die, or put it on hiatus after this season. I’ve trained the Purmas on it well this year, so hopefully we can come to an agreement on the transfer.

Monday was the finalization of the Eureka Room overview document. That was a major milestone. On Wednesday I began reaching out to people who might help with some of the financing in one way or another. That was another milestone.

The power went out at the Room early Sunday. We ended up canceling about $800 in bookings. Ouch. On Monday the electrician discovered there was a wire from out building to the building next door that was torn down last week. It was underground. The storm Saturday night (my guess) allowed water to seep into the ground and short out the breaker. Thankfully this was fixed but it cost time and money.

Also in the last week: both team members sick at the same time, the sound acting funny in the room for some reason, the new macOS did not support my development environment so I had to roll back the OS. Took me 12 hours to figure out that was the issue and to successfully recover most of what I needed. I tried the next day but that was the demolition day next door and it was not quiet enough to think so I did stuff at home instead. (That was very disheartening because I had been wanting for weeks to get back on development and finally sat down to that mess. Nothing got done.)

The Lease on Cesar Chavez

The lease is up at the end of March. Sounds like the landlord will renew it if I want. On the one hand, I could do that and continue to do a little more than break even and develop programs and work on the concept. But that locks me in to this building and I couldn’t grow as I could if I had a bigger place. I’m also limiting revenue.

On the other hand, I could end the lease and take a couple months off. I could use the break. Plus with the calendar company exit this might be the perfect time to do that.

If the landlord is good with the same rate for another year then I might take them up on it. If they are looking to raise the rent, I think I’m maxed out for that space and would just pack it up and head out of town for a while. Seems like they would be inclined to keep a low maintenance timely-paying bird-in-the-hand tenant but we’ll see…
