The You Can Only Say Yes Museum

July 5, 2022

In this museum, you are only allowed to say, “Yes”. Other than that, talking is not permitted.

Maybe it’s not “yes”. It could be some other word. Maybe different rooms of the museum have different words. Maybe you are encouraged to say it to the other patrons or maybe to the art. How do you know what word to say? Maybe it’s in the museum’s name (e.g., “The Museum Where You Can Only Say Yes”). Or maybe, if the words change room to room, they are broadcast on a loudspeaker. Hearing the word repeated a lot might get you more motivated to say the word.

Maybe you are wearing museum headphones and the audio repeats the word to you over and over. Maybe it’s not a word. Maybe it’s just a sound. Maybe the sound morphs as you move into different areas. Maybe the sound becomes music. Maybe you hear what others hear. Maybe not. Maybe you hear what only some others hear. But that is the only sound/word/music you are permitted to make.

Maybe you wear glasses that go dim or bright based on where you walk. Maybe the lighting changes based on where you walk.   But that’s probably another museum.

Maybe the museum exhibits are sound activated. You go to the work, you say yes. It hears you say yes and then it responds to that.

Maybe, if it was not just one word, you might have a list of words and have to figure out which word you say to trigger which exhibit. Maybe you are trapped in the room until you figure out which word to say to something. That seems like more of an escape room idea, but I like the idea that you have to say the right thing to the art to get the full art out of it.

Or, maybe instead of using the right word you have use the right volume level for that word. Say it too quietly and this art doesn’t get it. Say it too loudly and that art doesn’t get it. You won’t get the full art until you can do what the art needs you to do.
