Museum Ideas – Odds and Ends

December 9, 2022

A lot of what I write starts in documents as thoughts and never gets any further. But looking through those docs this morning I see a bunch of curious, half-baked, and/or terrible ideas I thought I’d gather up and share with you.

“Museum of temperatures. You have to guess what temperature each room is.  Or maybe just objects you feel.“

This could be expanded to also include various ranges of electrical shocks.

“A room filled with bubbles. Not a few bubbles but a billion bubbles. You have to wear eyewear to protect yourself. Maybe even an oxygen tank. The bubbles are just everywhere. It’s not foam. It’s bubbles. Maybe they drop from the ceiling and you are standing on a grate. Because that stuff is going to build up and be slippery.“

I like how I’m very specific in that it is NOT foam – it’s bubbles. Despite the fact that I don’t know if there really is a difference between foam and bubbles.

“The museum of candy that other people have licked and now you can lick it, too.” and the related “The museum of half eaten food. People eat half of something and then leave the rest in the museum. Maybe for the next person to eat half of the remaining half”

I think this idea has potential for a certain type of adventurer. I am not that type.

“The museum of cool stuff that got knocked over.”

This seems pretty doable though more likely an exhibit than a whole museum. Also I’m pretty sure visitors are going to want to knock stuff over so we’ll have to decide if we will accommodate that.

“A room with a lot of taxidermy. Like a whole lot. And it all faces you and looks pretty angry.”

The idea that we’ve killed a lot of animals to show you that they are mad that we killed them to show you they are mad has a nice circular irony to it. It’s also a terrible idea. I’d rather eat some stranger’s leftover half-sandwich that’s been sitting in a museum for god knows how long.

“The museum of mechanical friends.”

This sounds both heart-warming and sad at the same time. Me, being anti-dystopian, I’m sure I envisioned it as janky robots flailing awkward affection at visitors. Might be the best idea on this list. Admittedly, it’s a low bar.

Finally, one bonus idea for you. This is not a museum but an experience room idea.

“Dentist. This seems like a terrible idea for a game or program.”
